We caught up with R. Reagan Sahadi, where he shared everything from his approach to effective decision-making to the people who have influenced his thinking.

Can you share an example of a recent decision you made and the steps you took to reach your goal?

I recently decided to start marketing. It’s something I’ve been avoiding, since I don’t particularly enjoy doing it, but I have to admit it gets results. I researched some of the best legal advertising firms around to get that process started.

What is your approach to starting a new business venture?

The first step is getting the right tools in place for success, and having a strong support team is essential. You also need to keep the end goal in mind at all times.

What are some of the keys to effective decision-making?

Step back and look at the big picture. Doing this lets you see the forest instead of the trees. It makes decision-making much simpler when you can see the whole picture.

What people have influenced your thinking and might be of interest to others?

I gravitate toward middle-of-the-road thinkers. I’m not an extremist in my views — I try to stay balanced and see both sides. I grew up during the Ronald Reagan era and admired his influence. I also liked John Kasich, the former Governor of Ohio, and Ann Richards for her straight talk. And I’ve always liked Bill Clinton, because I thought he was incredibly intelligent and relatable.

What was the worst job you ever had, and what did you learn from it?

The worst job I had was working as an insurance defense lawyer. Through that experience, I learned that being a plaintiff’s attorney suited my personality much better, and I was able to shift my focus accordingly.

Why is your city a great place to live and work?

Corpus Christi, Texas is a “big little city” — it offers the main attractions of a major city while keeping a small-town feel, with low stress and little traffic. It’s a great place to raise a family.

What’s one book you recommend everyone should read, and why?

The Art of War by Sun Tzu. Although it’s a military text, it contains valuable rules for life to live by.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Take more chances.
